Knowledge Hierarchies and Gender Stratification in the Social Sciences

This project will examine how gender and intellectual position taking (in terms of thematic and methodological focus), in conjunction with other factors, intersect to influence early-career researchers’ chances of rising in the ranks.

A surprisingly neglected topic in the scholarship on gender stratification in academia concerns the formation of knowledge hierarchies within disciplines that ascribe value and prestige to certain research topics and methods, while marginalizing others. This project combines computational text analysis and CV data and administrative data to examine how gender and intellectual position taking (in terms of thematic and methodological focus) intersect to influence young researchers’ career opportunities in the social sciences.
