DKK 50 million for new research centre: ‘Crafting Quantum: From Scientific Promise to Societal Pathways’
Professor Christian Borch from the Department of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen will co-lead the new research centre ‘Crafting Quantum: From Scientific Promise to Societal Pathways’, which has just received a grant of DKK 50 million over six years from the Carlsberg Foundation. The grant marks the foundation's 150th anniversary.
Quantum technologies are powerful yet hard to grasp.
‘Crafting Quantum: From Scientific Promise to Societal Pathways’ is a new interdisciplinary research centre exploring how quantum technologies move from technical possibility to societally meaningful use. Combining history, organisation and management studies, and sociology with close collaboration across the Danish quantum ecosystem, the centre examines how coordination in practice, valuation in markets, and civic legitimacy shape quantum futures.
As quantum technologies grow in strategic importance, Denmark needs capabilities not only to develop the technology, but also to shape how it is understood, valued, and legitimised in society. The centre builds long-term capacity by training talent and producing knowledge in the humanities and social sciences that supports responsible entrepreneurship, leadership, and governance, as well as informed public debate.
The centre is led by Professor Christina Lubinski and Professor Silviya Svejenova, both Copenhagen Business School, and Professor Christian Borch, University of Copenhagen.
One of three anniversary centres
The centre is one of three new interdisciplinary research centres supported by the Carlsberg Foundation to mark its 150th anniversary. Each centre receives DKK 50 million over six years.
