Memes are perhaps the most effecient media for spreading information online. Most people associate the small pictures with innocent humor, but they are increasingly used to promote hateful ideologies and transgress the values of others. No action occurs in social vacuum and there is therefore an urgent need for explanations of such behavior.

As a part of the research project, ExOC, I examine this exact behavior, focusing on the social and behavioral dynamics at play when youth share such memes. My research centers in on the sociotechnical features of the various online platforms (e.g., 4Chan, Discord, and Reddit), and how they form the online interactions leading to transgressive meme-sharing behavior.
